A tax free Buddha statue

A Japanese style Buddha at the Kalmyk Temple

It was not possible to check the story since we had no access to original documents so we rely on news paper report. When the parcel with the statue arrived to Belgrade, the Custom Office estimated its value and demanded that a tax should be paid. The tax was so high that poor Kalmyks could not possibly pay it, but authorities were insistent. Finally, the Kalmyks pulled all the strings (official & unofficial alike) and managed to get the statue without paying the tax.
